Operating system and software
QNAP relies on its own operating system QTS, with which I have had very little contact so far. My experience was with a fairly old version, which I can only describe as taking some getting used to. So let’s take a look at the current status.

To begin with, the wizard would like us to set up a storage pool.

We’ll leave the advanced features such as tiered storage or encryption to one side for now.

Two of the installed 4TB HDDs are placed in a RAID1 and form the main storage.

In the next step, we can reserve storage space for our snapshots and set up an alarm if a certain percentage of used storage is exceeded.

Finally, another overview of the selected setting before the pool is created.

We then create a volume or file system on the pool, and here too we have various options depending on the intended use.

I like the fact that the advantages and disadvantages of the various volume types are compared in detail.

I simply use a large volume across the entire storage pool for my tests, but a smaller split is of course also possible.

And of course there’s another overview before everything is confirmed and implemented.

It can take some time before a RAID sync is completed. However, the resync speed can first be set to “High” in the Storage Manager, after which it will be as fast as the HDDs allow.
