The Edifier MR5 is a compact, active nearfield monitor in the lower to mid-range price segment, but its technical implementation clearly sets it apart from typical entry-level speakers. With a pair price of 249 euros, which is well below many classic studio monitors, it is clearly aimed at beginners, home studio operators and discerning multimedia users who value clean sound, practical features and an appealing design. At the same time, the internal construction is so unusual that it is worth analyzing in detail. The discrete control of each frequency range via separate amplifier channels, the chosen cabinet architecture and the choice of materials result in an overall picture that is rarely found in the market segment and reveals so many special features in a teardown that two complete sections are required.
Edifier offers the MR5 in at least two color options, a subtle black and a striking yet classy white with copper-colored accents on the tweeter, woofer and volume control. And in general: I was genuinely surprised at how voluminous and powerful the MR5s sound. I would not have expected such a broad foundation from such compact monitors, especially as even at moderate levels they develop a fullness that is more reminiscent of much larger cabinets. This unexpected presence and the superior performance in the bass range ultimately led me to dedicate a separate, detailed article to the MR5 after my earlier test of the MR4, because it’s worth it. No, it’s not hi-fi and it’s not advertised as such, but it’s still better than many things that would like to call themselves hi-fi.
Unboxing including look & feel
The unboxing leaves a tidy and high-quality impression. The box contains the two speakers, a multi-pin, shielded connection cable for transmitting all six amplifier signals from the master to the slave, a mains cable, a 3.5 mm stereo to 3.5 mm stereo audio cable and a printed quick start guide. The transport protection in the box is sturdy and tailored to the sensitive components so that there is no risk of damage during transportation.
The cabinet dimensions are 159 millimetres wide, 264 millimetres high and 257 millimetres deep. The pair weighs in at just under 7 kilograms, with the active master speaker naturally being somewhat heavier than the passive slave. The housing is made of MDF panels with a thickness of around 15 millimetres, the surface of which is neatly lacquered, and on the front there is a 3.5 mm jack socket for the AUX input and another for the headphone output in addition to the copper-colored multifunctional rotary control for volume and source selection. A small LED indicates the operating status and the active input.
The tweeter is a 25-millimetre dome tweeter, embedded in a slightly recessed, perforated sound guide, which improves the dispersion characteristics in the high frequency range and minimizes annoying edge reflections.
Below this sits the 127-millimetre midrange driver with a woven cone structure in a carbon fibre look and a solid, copper-coloured anodized phase plug cover. This phase plug fulfills several functions: It prevents compression effects in the center of the cone, reduces standing waves in the center of the cone and improves heat dissipation from the voice coil. The actual basket of the woofer is concealed inside and firmly bolted to the housing via the solid front panel, which increases stability and minimizes unwanted vibrations. I’ll come back to this in a moment.
The rear of the master loudspeaker houses all the relevant connections and controls for studio use. In addition to RCA inputs for unbalanced sources, there are balanced XLR and TRS jack sockets, making the MR5 also suitable for professional setups. Two rotary controls can be used to adjust the high and low frequencies in several stages, and the input sensitivity range can also be selected between 4 dBu and -10 dBV using a switch. A large bass reflex port provides pressure in the low frequency range without flow-related background noise, while the connection panel at the bottom contains the multi-pin speaker output to the slave.
The combination of compact dimensions, high cabinet stability for this size and a driver configuration that is rarely found in this price range in conjunction with a multi-channel power amplifier architecture makes the MR5 a speaker that stands out both visually and technically, which is precisely why it is being used as a test object today.
