Microsoft has done it again, report our colleagues at Wccftech: A current security update for Windows 11 – namely KB5063878 – apparently causes critical failures in certain SSD models as soon as large amounts of data are written. Initial reports indicate that drives with Phison controllers are particularly affected. It is particularly ironic that the update was installed while users were updating Cyberpunk 2077, among other things – and that is exactly when the SSD failed.

The error is reproducible: If large amounts of data (from approx. 50 GB at a time) are written, the write process is aborted and the drive is no longer recognized by the operating system. After a restart, the partition is completely missing. Internal tests by the user @Necoru_cat indicate that the error occurs at the memory controller level – a “lock-up” of the controller causes the drive to disappear completely from the system. The assumption: kernel-level regression or faulty drivers that were delivered as part of the security update and do not correctly intercept certain command sequences during sequential writing.

Some of the affected SSDs are based on Phison PS5012-E12 or similar platforms. An initial unofficial list of affected models includes
- Corsair Force MP600
- KIOXIA Exceria Plus G4
- SanDisk Extreme PRO M.2 NVMe 3D
- Fikwot FN955
- Various drives with Phison controllers
Some HDDs also show similar symptoms, which could indicate a generic I/O stack error or a regression in the storage subsystem. The fact that no single firmware or specific manufacturer is affected reinforces the suspicion of a Windows-specific problem.
So far, neither Microsoft nor the affected SSD manufacturers have officially confirmed or documented the problem. Official support forums are also not (yet) showing a broad mass of complaints, but this is more due to the technical depth of the problem: Many users are likely to blame a sudden SSD failure on hardware defects or other causes – without recognizing the Windows update as the trigger. There is currently no official solution. Users who use affected SSDs or generally rely on Phison controllers should urgently avoid writing large amounts of data (such as game installations or video editing files) in one go. Not updating is also a pragmatic measure at present, unless it is absolutely necessary for security reasons. For Microsoft, this is another example of a lack of quality control for security-relevant patches – and at the same time a diplomatic slap in the face for storage manufacturers, whose firmware apparently reacts too fragile to low OS layers. The collateral damage for end users is as usual: data loss, reinstallation, no help.
