Summary and overview of all games in Ultra HD with super sampling, ray tracing and frame generation
In Ultra HD (UHD, 3840 x 2160 pixels), technologies such as DLSS and FSR are crucial for achieving playable frame rates, especially with ray tracing enabled. Four times the number of pixels compared to WQHD places a considerable load on the GPU. DLSS and FSR reduce the render resolution and upscale the image using advanced algorithms, reducing the GPU load without noticeably affecting image quality. DLSS uses AI models, while FSR is based on open standards and is compatible with AMD and Nvidia cards.
Ray tracing in UHD significantly increases GPU requirements, but technologies such as DLSS 3 and FSR 3 with frame generation improve perceived fluidity by inserting AI-generated frames. Nvidia cards such as the RTX 5090 show particularly strong performance in tests with patch tracing that simulates realistic lighting. DLSS and FSR offer significant advantages over native UHD render resolution, as they reduce the computational load and enable smooth rendering even on less powerful hardware. The average FPS values from 11 games provide a basic performance estimate in UHD, but are of limited significance. Games vary greatly in their load on the CPU, GPU and memory, which can distort the results. The average value therefore only serves as a rough guide and is less useful for a detailed hardware analysis, as the selection of games has a significant impact on the validity of the results.
The normalization of FPS values across different games serves to present the performance of a hardware objectively and comparably. As different games place varying demands on the CPU and GPU, raw FPS values are not always directly comparable. For normalization, the FPS values of all tested games are brought to a uniform scale and only then calculated as an average value. This approach allows for a balanced assessment of hardware performance that is not distorted by the specific characteristics of individual titles. I use this metric for both the average FPS and the P1 Low, i.e. the percentile with the slowest rendered frames. The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti takes 15 percent off the RTX 4070 Ti Super.
The P1 Low is a benchmark value that describes the performance of the lower 1% of the measured FPS and focuses on disruptive drops in performance. The FPS values are sorted for the calculation and the highest value of the lower 1% is specified as P1 Low. This makes it possible to isolate serious frame drops that can impair the quality of the game. This measure serves as an important indicator of frame rate stability and reveals problems such as micro-stutters that the average value does not show. In current tests, the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti is around 13 percent ahead of the RTX 4070 Ti Super and therefore offers more stable frame rates.
The power consumption in UHD with activated technologies such as DLSS 3 or FSR and ray tracing is primarily determined by the GPU load. Intelligent upscaling and frame generation reduce the pixels to be calculated, which can significantly reduce the energy requirement compared to native resolution with ray tracing. Nvidia graphics cards in particular benefit from this reduction in load and also process patch tracing efficiently.
The efficiency is then the counter calculation, so to speak, where the amount of watts used (average over the respective game) and the average FPS of the game in question are put in relation:
