The WQHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels) is very popular in the gaming sector, as it offers a balanced compromise between high image quality and good performance. This resolution is particularly important for graphics benchmarks that focus on raster graphics, as it places greater demands on the GPU than Full HD, but does not reach the high requirements of 4K. This enables a practical assessment of the performance of modern graphics cards, especially with regard to the smooth display of demanding visual effects and complex scenarios. As ray tracing performance is not taken into account in pure raster graphics benchmarks, the focus of tests in WQHD is exclusively on classic rendering performance, which allows an objective assessment of hardware performance independent of additional technologies.
Summary and overview of all games in WQHD
The calculation of an average value from the cumulative FPS values of 11 games is intended to provide a rough estimate of the average gaming performance of a system. The frame rates of the individual games are added together and divided by the number of games to obtain a simplified average figure. However, this average value is only meaningful to a limited extent, as it does not take into account the specific characteristics and requirements of the games tested. Games place different loads on the CPU, GPU and memory, which can lead to considerable fluctuations in performance. For example, a particularly resource-intensive game can have a negative impact on the average value, while a less demanding game can distort the result upwards.
The normalization of FPS values across different games serves to present the performance of a hardware objectively and comparably. As different games place varying demands on the CPU and GPU, raw FPS values are not always directly comparable. For normalization, the FPS values of all tested games are brought to a uniform scale and only then calculated as an average value. This approach allows for a balanced assessment of hardware performance that is not distorted by the specific characteristics of individual titles. I use this metric for both the average FPS and the P1 Low, i.e. the percentile with the slowest rendered frames. The GeForce RTX 5080 is now more than 8 percent slower than the RTX 4080 Super in terms of FPS.
The P1 Low is a measured value that is used in benchmarks to analyze the frame rate (FPS). It is the value below which the lowest 1% of the measured FPS fall. Unlike the average value, which describes the general performance, the P1 Low focuses on the display of performance drops, which can be particularly disruptive when gaming. The P1 value is calculated by sorting the FPS measurements by size and determining the lower 1%. The highest value in this group is indicated as P1 Low. This isolates sudden, severe frame drops which, although rare, can significantly affect the perceived fluidity of the game. The P1 Low is therefore a useful indicator to evaluate the stability of the frame rate in addition to the average performance and to make problems such as micro-stutters or uneven frame distribution visible. The GeForce RTX 5080 is a good 8 percent ahead of the RTX 4080 Super here.
In WQHD without DLSS, CPU utilization in demanding games is generally lower compared to lower resolutions such as Full HD, as the GPU tends to take on more work in higher resolutions. In such scenarios, the performance requirement shifts more to the graphics card, which means that the CPU is less likely to become a bottleneck. However, the CPU load depends not only on the resolution, but also heavily on the type of game and its optimization. Games with complex AI, physics calculations or many simultaneous processes, such as large open-world titles or real-time strategy games, place a significant load on the CPU, even at higher resolutions. However, if the GPU is heavily utilized, the CPU load often remains moderate, as it does not have to constantly provide data for the next image calculation. Thus, the CPU load in WQHD without DLSS can often be considered “sufficiently dimensioned” for demanding games as long as the CPU does not lag significantly behind the performance of the GPU. However, careful hardware tuning is important to avoid potential bottlenecks. In this context, I also refer to the following values for GPU and CPU power consumption, which show when which component is operating under full load:
The efficiency is then the counter calculation, so to speak, where you put the amount of watts used (average over the respective game) and the average FPS of the game in question in relation:
