Ultra-HD (UHD) describes a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels and is often mistakenly referred to as “4K” in the gaming sector, although real 4K with 4096 x 2160 pixels is mainly used in film production. UHD is characterized by an exceptionally high image sharpness and enables a detailed display, which is particularly noticeable on large monitors or televisions. The main disadvantage of UHD is the considerable demands placed on the graphics card, as the number of pixels is four times higher than WQHD.
This greatly increases the computing load on the GPU, which is a challenge even for powerful graphics cards in modern games. Especially when activating resource-intensive effects such as ray tracing, this can lead to difficulties in maintaining stable frame rates. To ensure a smooth display, technologies such as DLSS or FSR are often used to reduce the load on performance without causing any noticeable loss of quality. UHD is also less useful for monitors with smaller screen diagonals, as the visual advantage of the higher resolution is hardly noticeable in such cases, while the hardware is unnecessarily overloaded. For this reason, this resolution is particularly relevant for larger screens and immersive gaming experiences.
Summary and overview of all games in Ultra HD
The cumulation of the FPS values from 11 games and the calculation of an average value are also used in Ultra HD to obtain a rough overview of the average gaming performance of a system. The frame rates from the individual games are added together and divided by the number of games to obtain a simple average figure. However, this average is only of limited value as it does not take into account the individual characteristics of the games tested. Different games have varying CPU, GPU and memory requirements and can therefore perform differently. A particularly CPU-intensive game can distort the average value downwards, while a less demanding game can artificially raise the average.
The purpose of normalizing FPS values across different games is to present the hardware performance objectively and comparably. Since games place different demands on the CPU and GPU, raw FPS values of individual titles are not directly comparable. Normalization scales the FPS values of each tested game to a common benchmark before calculating an average value. This ensures a balanced assessment of hardware performance that is independent of the specific characteristics of individual games. I apply this methodology to both the average FPS and the so-called P1 Low, which describes the percentile value of the slowest rendered frames. In this context, it can be seen that the GeForce RTX 5080 achieves a performance increase of almost 10 percent compared to the RTX 4080 Super.
The P1 Low is a measured value that is used in benchmarks to evaluate the frame rate (FPS). It describes the threshold below which the lowest 1% of the measured FPS values lie. In contrast to the average value, which reflects the general performance of a system, the P1 Low focuses on analyzing performance drops that can be perceived as particularly disruptive. To calculate the P1 Low, the recorded FPS values are sorted according to their level, and the highest value of the lowest 1% is specified as the P1 Low.
This approach makes it possible to identify serious frame drops that occur infrequently but can significantly impair the perceived fluidity of the game. The P1 Low thus serves as a useful indicator of frame rate stability and allows the evaluation of problems such as micro-stutters or irregular frame distribution that would not be detectable by the average value alone. In current tests, the GeForce RTX 5080 outperforms the RTX 4080 Super in this area by almost 7%, which indicates better frame rate stability.
The power consumption of a system increases significantly in Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixels), as the high resolution places enormous demands on the graphics card. The GPU has to calculate a significantly larger number of pixels than in lower resolutions, which leads to increased power consumption. This effect is exacerbated by demanding graphic settings such as maximum texture quality, shadows or ray tracing. In addition to the GPU, the CPU also contributes indirectly to the higher power consumption, as complex calculations for game worlds and physical effects in UHD are often more intensive. In addition, power supply units and cooling systems are put under greater strain under these conditions, which further increases the overall energy requirements of the system. Ultimately, Ultra HD not only leads to higher graphic quality, but also to a noticeable increase in energy consumption, which should be taken into account when selecting the hardware and power supply. The following values for GPU and CPU power consumption show when which component is operating under full load:
The efficiency is then effectively the counter calculation, where you put the amount of watts used (average over the respective game) and the average FPS of the game in question in relation:
