Corsair RM850x Shift ATX 3.1PSU Review – Stable lateral position with noiseless efficiency

Unboxing and accessories

The unboxing of the Corsair RM850x Shift gives the impression of a carefully prepared product that is not only functional, but also tailored to a demanding target group in terms of presentation. The packaging meets the high standard that Corsair has been practicing for years, as the power supply is securely embedded and fully protected against transport stresses. All-round, durable cardboard padding holds the device in place so that no mechanical damage to the inner workings is to be expected, even during long journeys. The outer design of the packaging is functional and contains the most important technical key data as well as an illustration of the modular panel on the side, which is the central feature of the Shift series.

Upon opening, it is noticeable that Corsair places great importance on an orderly and clear presentation of the components, as all cables are housed separately in their own bag. The clear separation of the power supply unit, cables and documentation makes it easier to remove and prevents damage caused by rubbing contacts. The power supply unit itself is also packaged in a cover, which protects the surface from scratches and at the same time underlines the high quality standard.

The supplied accessories include the fully modular cable equipment, which is essential for the Shift concept because the user only has to lay the cables that are actually needed. In addition to the standard cables for the mainboard, CPU and graphics card, the scope of delivery also includes several SATA and Molex cables, which offer sufficient connection options in typical system configurations. There is also a power cable, cable ties, four mounting screws and a compact manual that explains the most important safety instructions and basic installation steps. The documentation is deliberately kept brief, as the target group for a power supply unit in this performance class generally has the relevant prior knowledge.

Another positive aspect is that Corsair preforms the cables neatly and provides clean transitions between connectors and cables so that the cables can be laid without unnecessary resistance. This is particularly important for the shift layout, as the cable routing depends heavily on the flexibility and dimensional stability of the cables due to the lateral alignment of the ports. The accessories are complete, functional and of high quality, without superfluous elements that would artificially increase the price. The overall picture of the unboxing therefore conveys the impression of a well thought-out product that has reached a high level of maturity both technically and in its external presentation.

The cable equipment

The cable configuration of the Corsair RM850x Shift does not differ functionally from the conventional RMx, but the modular connector panel positioned on the side makes handling the cables considerably easier. The cables themselves follow Corsair’s established design with a fully modular structure and sufficient length so that even large-format cases can be easily supplied. The use of flat, easy-to-lay strands helps to ensure that the airflow in the housing is only minimally affected, which is particularly advantageous for systems with high thermal loads. The integration of the 12V 2×6 connector meets the requirements of current graphics cards and enables the safe operation of high-performance models. The two EPS cables ensure a stable power supply for modern processors, whereby the cable lengths are selected in such a way that even complex housing structures do not lead to tensile loads.

The cable quality is of a high standard, as the conductor cross-section has been selected to be practical throughout and the sheathing remains sufficiently flexible without compromising on stability. The practical advantage is particularly evident in the context of the shift layout, as the cables can be routed without disruptive torsion or unfavorable bending radii. In combination with the complete modularity, this results in equipment that is both functional and ergonomic. Users who regularly have to rebuild or rewire their system benefit noticeably from this design. Even compared to power supply units in the same performance class, cable routing is easier because the mechanical concept significantly improves access to the connections.

The cable lengths cover both typical and more demanding case configurations, as they provide sufficient reserves for complex builds. The number of PCIe and EPS connectors is appropriate for an 850 watt power supply and allows the operation of powerful components without having to use adapters or Y solutions. The 12V 2×6 connection ensures that modern graphics cards in the high-end segment are supplied correctly and safely. The processing quality of the cables is consistently high quality because the flexibility is large enough to realize tight radii, while the cross-section of the conductors remains stable enough to keep heating and voltage drop low.

Modular Cables
Cable Description Cable Count Connector Count (Total) Gauge In Cable Capacitors
ATX connector 20 4 pin (610mm) 1 1 16-20AWG No
4 4 pin EPS12V (750mm) 2 2 18AWG No
6 2 pin PCIe (650mm) 3 3 16-18AWG No
12 2 pin PCIe (650mm) (600W) 1 1 16-24AWG No
SATA (500mm 115mm 115mm 115mm) 2 8 18AWG No
4-pin Molex (550mm 100mm 100mm) 1 3 18AWG No
AC Power Cord (1400mm) – C13 coupler 1 1 18AWG

The Corsair RM850x Shift thus offers a cable solution that impresses with both ergonomics and quality in practical use. The modular Shift panel further enhances this impression by improving accessibility to the connections in almost any case. This sets the device apart from many conventional ATX power supply units, which are often less convenient when it comes to cable handling.

@Igor Wallossek

So, gefixt. Mein Fehler - falscher Ordner.
