Prices for DDR5 RAM and soldered derivatives such as LPDDR5 and LPDDR5X have been rising continuously for months. This development affects both the free component market and pre-configured systems from large OEM manufacturers. Market observations show that these are not short-term fluctuations, but rather a structural shortage in the DRAM segment, which is increasingly affecting end customer prices.
A key driver of this development is the sharp rise in demand from the AI and data center environment. The major memory manufacturers Samsung, Micron and SK Hynix have switched significant parts of their production capacities to high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators. As a result, fewer production lines are available for classic DRAM products such as DDR5 and mobile LPDDR5X components. At the same time, demand from the server and cloud sector remains high, further exacerbating supply bottlenecks.
This market situation is increasingly reflected in the end customer market. Price comparisons show that DDR5 memory kits have become significantly more expensive within a short period of time. Modules with higher capacities are particularly hard hit, as they rely on modern DRAM ICs, which are currently only available in limited quantities. The price development can no longer be explained by seasonal effects alone, but follows a long-term trend of rising manufacturing costs.
Against this backdrop, the pricing of individual notebook manufacturers is attracting particular attention. Dell is charging an additional 550 US dollars for an upgrade from 16 to 32 GiByte LPDDR5X memory for a current Ultrabook model in the USA. This amount is significantly higher than previous OEM surcharges and also exceeds the traditionally high memory prices of other premium providers. It cannot be verified whether this price relates exclusively to the memory or whether other configuration differences are included. Nevertheless, the example illustrates the impact of the tight DRAM market situation on OEM offerings.
Framework has publicly criticized this pricing and pointed out that a comparable memory upgrade is currently offered for around 80 US dollars. At the same time, the company admits that these prices are only sustainable as long as its own stocks from previous purchasing phases are available. If DRAM components also have to be procured at current market prices in the future, Framework also expects the cost of memory upgrades to rise.
Analysts assume that the situation in the DRAM market will not ease in the medium term. It will take several years to build up new production capacities, while demand from the AI segment will continue to increase. Against this backdrop, further price increases for DDR5 and LPDDR5 derivatives are considered likely. A return to the price levels of previous years is currently not expected.
Conclusion
The ongoing price increases for DDR5 and LPDDR5 memory are the result of structural changes in the DRAM market and exceptionally high demand from the AI environment. The example of Dell shows how strongly this development can be reflected in extreme OEM surcharges. Even if individual manufacturers are currently still offering cheaper memory upgrades, the market situation indicates that high RAM prices will become the new normal in the medium term. So my DDR5 64 GB kit now costs 696 EURO.
