Windows 11 receives new preview update: Microsoft is working on this

The current preview version KB5070316 with build 26220.7344 is distributed in the dev and beta channel of the Insider Program and expands Windows 11 both functionally and structurally. The focus is on a deeper integration of AI agents, a modernization of the multimedia stack and the first steps towards central management of app updates. However, the release comes at a time when previous updates have been increasingly criticized, as some users have reported faulty display elements or problems with logging in after installing various patches. Despite this situation, Microsoft is continuing with the expansion of AI-supported functions.

A central component is the first-ever native support of the Model Context Protocol. This open standard allows digital agents to interact with applications and system components via a secure on-device registry. This means that functions such as searching in the file explorer or intervening in system settings can only be carried out locally, which improves both data protection and reaction speed. On Copilot systems in particular, assistants can recognize file contents based on complex criteria or adjust hardware parameters using natural language.

At the same time, Microsoft is modernizing the area of music and media production. The new Windows MIDI Services replace outdated structures and now fully support MIDI 1.0 and MIDI 2.0. This achieves a higher control resolution and, for the first time, enables genuine multiple access so that several programs can use the same port at the same time. This eliminates the need for external driver solutions for many workflows.

At the administrative level, Microsoft is introducing a new section in the settings. Under Apps, the App Updates tab is now available, which is based on the Unified Update Orchestration Platform. This interface is intended to make proprietary updaters superfluous in the long term and carry out updates based on user activity. The area currently appears empty, as applications first have to be adapted to the new structure. In addition, Quick Machine Recovery is activated by default on non-domain-bound Pro devices to simplify system restores in the event of start-up problems. The Open with window has also been expanded and now directly suggests suitable applications from the Microsoft Store if no suitable software is available locally.

The build corrects several bugs that have come to light in recent weeks. These include a search window appearing in isolation on the desktop, failures of fingerprint recognition after hibernation and problematic behavior of the Windows P combination, where the display and projection menu was not displayed reliably. Despite these improvements, the version still has known limitations. In some cases, the Start menu and the Notification Center do not respond to clicks, File Explorer can crash when opening context menus and connected Bluetooth devices do not always report their battery level correctly.

Conclusion

The preview version extends Windows 11 technically in several places and lays the structural foundations for future AI and management functions. At the same time, the build shows that development at this stage remains prone to errors, which is why it is not recommended for use on systems in productive use.
