Windows login irritates users: password field only accessible via blank space

The preview update KB5064081 for Windows 11 leads to a display error that affects the logon process and causes irritation. After installing the update, users report that the normally visible password symbol within the logon options is completely missing. However, the function is still available, as the corresponding input field can still be opened by clicking on the unmarked area in its original position. This feedback has increased significantly since the update was released, as a result of which the bug has received increasing attention. Microsoft has confirmed the problem and expressly points out that the workaround described serves as a temporary solution until a bug fix update is available. A time frame for the correction is not yet available and the manufacturer refers to information to follow later.

The update itself belongs to the group of optional preview updates, which are not security-relevant and are therefore only installed by users who initiate updates manually or have activated preview installations. This restriction means that the bug does not affect all systems, but only devices on which preview patches are deliberately used. In terms of content, KB5064081 brings a wide-ranging collection of functional changes and technical adjustments. These include revised processes within Windows recovery, updates for the ReFS file system, optimizations of ARM64 performance in connection with certain use cases and adjustments for Chinese input methods. At the same time, the update expands several functional areas such as Recall, Click to Do, the taskbar, the search environment, widgets, File Explorer and Windows Hello. These additions are related to the ongoing restructuring of internal system components, as Microsoft is increasingly introducing modernized libraries and interfaces.

The accumulation of such side effects in Windows updates has become apparent several times in recent months. One known case concerned the Windows recovery environment, in which users were briefly unable to use the mouse or keyboard. This circumstance made it necessary to quickly provide an emergency patch. At the same time, the Media Creation Tool was temporarily impaired, which made installations and upgrades even more difficult. The effects of individual Windows updates were not limited to Microsoft’s own environment. Other manufacturers also experienced unexpected consequences. Nvidia released a hotfix in November which, according to its own information, compensated for significant performance losses in various games. Affected users previously reported reduced frame rates that occurred after installing the Windows update. In some cases, the driver significantly increased performance and thus compensated for the previous limitations.

Overall, it appears that the current preview update causes a functionally relevant but clearly delineated side effect. As the error only affects the display of the password symbol and the login can still be fully executed, the practical effects remain limited. At the same time, the incident makes it clear that functional changes within the preview updates can still be associated with unexpected side effects that only become visible in widespread use.

Conclusion

The display error of the password symbol is a malfunction that only has a minor impact due to the fact that it is still possible to enter a password. As Microsoft has confirmed the cause and is working on a correction, the situation will remain unchanged until a fix is made available and does not require any immediate action beyond the workaround mentioned.
