Autodesk Maya is one of the leading tools for 3D animation, visual effects and modeling in the professional environment. It is primarily used in film and game production, but is also increasingly being used in technical design and real-time visualization. The SPECapc test for Maya 2024 simulates typical scenarios from these areas, including shading, texturing, wireframe views and real-time lighting effects. The benchmark thus allows a precise evaluation of shader performance, API compatibility and memory bandwidth.
GPU Composite Score
In the overall value of the SPECacp workload for Autodesk Maya 2024, the Radeon AI R9700 shows a very strong performance with 2.15 points and ranks directly behind the RX 9070XT, which is slightly ahead with 2.17 points. Both RDNA-4 models clearly set themselves apart from the Radeon Pro W7800, which remains solid with 2.01 points, but no longer achieves the efficiency of the new architecture. NVIDIA models fall significantly behind in this workload, which indicates the traditionally weaker optimization of the Ada generation for Maya. What is striking is the strong position of the Intel Arc Pro B60, which lands between the workstation cards with 1.33 points, but does not come close to the AMD leader. The overall GPU performance of Maya reacts very directly to shader and geometry performance, which is why the R9700 delivers an extremely stable and powerful result here. The small gap to the RX 9070XT once again confirms that the VRAM capacity rarely becomes a limiting factor in this scenario.
Shaded
The shaded display shows an almost identical picture. With 1.99 points, the Radeon AI R9700 is again just behind the RX 9070XT with 2.00 points. The Radeon Pro W7800 follows with 1.90 points, which is a respectable gap, but no threat to RDNA 4. Maya benefits greatly from high rasterization performance and stable shader utilization, which is why the R9700 is particularly convincing in this scenario. The clear gap to the NVIDIA RTX 4000 Ada, which only achieves 1.31 points, is interesting. This shows that AMD’s driver paths for Maya are significantly more mature.
Shaded SSAO
With Ambient Occlusion enabled, the load on the shaders increases significantly. The R9700 achieves 2.18 points here and, as before, remains just behind the RX 9070XT, which achieves 2.22 points. The Radeon Pro W7800 achieves 2.00 points and once again remains within sight, but does not benefit as much from AO calculations. The R9700 shows a very good balance between clock stability and cache efficiency in SSAO. In scenes with complex lighting structures, it offers very smooth and low-noise shading.
Wireframe on Shaded
In this particularly demanding view, which simultaneously loads fill rates and geometry processing, the Radeon AI R9700 easily takes the lead with 2.02 points and is thus slightly ahead of the RX 9070XT with 2.01 points. The somewhat more agile clock stability of the R9700 has a positive effect here, while the W7800 falls visibly behind with 1.93 points. This scenario clearly shows how effectively RDNA 4 cards handle large assemblies and complex topologies. The clean wireframe display is an important quality feature, especially for animated scenes and technical visualizations.
Wireframe on Shaded SSAO
With additional Ambient Occlusion, the R9700 remains very strong and achieves 2.24 points, while the RX 9070XT is again just ahead with 2.26 points. The Radeon Pro W7800 achieves 2.09 points, which is solid, but clearly lags behind the RDNA-4 models. The R9700 shows a high level of consistency in this area regardless of additional shader loads. This is particularly important in scenes with many overlaid meshes, where image stability and clean edge detail are often critical.
Textured
In texture-based views, the Radeon AI R9700 achieves the top score of 2.41 points together with the RX 9070XT. This is a clear lead over the Radeon Pro W7800 with 2.28 points. NVIDIA falls particularly behind in this scenario, which suggests inefficient paths for Maya viewport rendering. Texture-intensive views benefit greatly from high memory bandwidth and cache latency, both points where the monolithic RDNA-4 implementation has recognizable advantages.
Textured SSAO
With Ambient Occlusion activated in textured scenes, the R9700 achieves 2.16 points and is thus slightly behind the RX 9070XT with 2.22 points. The Radeon Pro W7800 achieves 1.95 points, which is noticeably lower. The good results of the R9700 show that it also offers high stability with combined texture and lighting effects. This is a clear advantage for productive use, especially with demanding visualizations and layouts.
Evaluation Cache Composite
The evaluation cache test evaluates the GPU’s ability to accelerate model changes, rigging operations and animation dependencies. The Radeon AI R9700 achieves 3.21 points and is therefore almost on a par with the Radeon Pro W7700, which leads with 3.25 points. The RX 9070XT follows close behind with 3.08 points. It is worth noting that the workstation models can make up some ground here, as they are traditionally more optimized. Nevertheless, the R9700 shows extremely stable dynamics in the scene update, which makes it very interesting for animation pipelines.
Interim conclusion
The benchmark results for Autodesk Maya 2024 confirm a recurring pattern that has already been seen in other applications. The Radeon AI R9700 consistently positions itself in the top field and delivers performance values that are only minimally behind the RX 9070XT. In some scenarios, it can even easily overtake it. The Radeon Pro W7800 performs well, but never reaches the level of the RDNA-4 models. The R9700 clearly benefits from a very efficient shader pipeline, a modern cache structure and high clock rates, which makes it superior in practically all Maya workloads. It demonstrates its architectural maturity particularly in complex representations such as SSAO, wireframe combinations and real-time texture projections. For users in animation, modeling and VFX, this makes a clear impression. The Radeon AI R9700 offers remarkably high performance with a large VRAM reserve, which makes it ideal even for larger scenes. It continues the trend of not only challenging classic workstation models, but in some cases clearly surpassing them.
