3 years after the launch of Intel’s 12th generation Alder Lake CPUs and the then new LGA1700, we unfortunately still have to talk about bent CPUs and remedies for them. Because with the new Core Ultra CPUs of the Arrow (Error) Lake family, there was a new socket LGA1851, but it still hasn’t really solved the problem of bending mainboards and CPUs. This is where Aquacomputer’s new “Reinforced Backplate” comes into play, which, like the products of other manufacturers, is intended to stiffen the mainboard and thus ensure better temperatures. Interestingly, there is also a model for AM5. We are testing both today!
The bending saga, the Washermod and Intel’s indifference
Anyone who wants to use an Intel desktop CPU in 2024 and is interested in thermal performance will sooner or later stumble across contact problems between coolers and the CPU due to different concavities. Basically, there are even 2 problems here:
- Due to the design of the ILM (Integrated Loading Mechanism), the CPU is bent in the socket. Solutions such as the Washermod from buildzoid and Frames as a replacement for the Intel ILM aim to make the CPU less concave or even convex and thus provide better contact for the cooler centrally on the IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader), directly above the underlying silicon die.
- Due to the high forces involved in mounting a cooler and the design of the standard LGA1700/1851 backplate, the entire mainboard is bent in the area of the socket. This is where additional or replacement backplates come into play, providing the mainboard with an additional backbone for reinforcement and thus preventing the mainboard board from bending with the cooler mounting points.
Point 2 is also where the current test subjects from Aquacomputer come in, and as Intel has if at all mitigated point 1 to the with LGA1851, these products will retain their relevance in the foreseeable future. I’ll link you to a few of our previous tests. The test setup remains the same and so we also have a direct comparison to the other backplate products, e.g. from Watercool or Alphacool.
